Herbalistic
This information is for educational purposes only. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before using any plant medicinally.
In traditional Asian medicine, teak leaves are used to treat inflammation, bronchitis, and skin conditions. The bark and wood have astringent properties and are employed in remedies for dysentery, leucoderma, and piles. Young leaves are sometimes used to make a medicinal tea for treating anemia and digestive issues.
Kitchen
While not commonly used in cuisine, young teak leaves are occasionally consumed as vegetables in parts of Java and India. In traditional Indonesian cooking, teak leaves are used to wrap tempeh during fermentation, imparting a subtle flavor and distinctive reddish color to the final product.
Ecology
Native to tropical deciduous forests of Southeast Asia, teak thrives in areas with distinct wet-dry seasons and well-drained soils. It's a pioneer species that can improve degraded lands, supports various wildlife, and its large leaves provide significant ground mulch. However, monoculture plantations can reduce biodiversity compared to natural forests.
Identification
Never consume a plant based solely on written descriptions or illustrations. Consult a local botanist when in doubt.
Tectona grandis is a large deciduous tree reaching 40m height, with quadrangular branchlets and opposite, ovate leaves 15-45cm long with prominent veins. The leaves feel rough and papery. Small white flowers appear in large terminal panicles, and the fruit is a drupe enclosed in an inflated, bladder-like calyx.
Building & Timber
Teak is considered the gold standard for outdoor construction timber due to its natural oil content providing exceptional rot, insect, and weather resistance. With a Janka hardness of 1,155 lbf, it's moderately hard, dimensionally stable, and works well despite its silica content. Premium grade teak is used in shipbuilding, bridges, and architectural millwork.
Curiosities
Teak leaves are among the largest in the tree world and can be used as disposable plates in rural areas. The wood contains natural rubber, contributing to its slip-resistance when wet. A single mature teak tree can be worth over $10,000, making teak plantations targets for theft. The wood's oil can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals during processing.
