Herbalistic

Known as 'miracle tree' - leaves contain complete proteins, vitamins A, B, C, calcium, iron, and potassium. Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Traditional uses include treating diabetes, high blood pressure, infections, and malnutrition. Seeds used for water purification. Oil from seeds used for skin conditions.
Kitchen
Young seed pods ('drumsticks') cooked like green beans in curries and stir-fries. Leaves used fresh in salads or cooked like spinach. Flowers edible with mushroom-like taste. Seeds eaten like peas when young, or pressed for oil. Leaf powder used as nutritional supplement. Roots used as horseradish substitute.
Ecology
Native to Indian subcontinent, thrives in tropical/subtropical climates. Drought-tolerant once established, grows in poor soils. Nitrogen-fixing companion, improves soil. Attracts pollinators with fragrant flowers. Deep taproot brings up nutrients. Grows 15-30 feet tall, can grow 6-15 feet in first year.
Identification
Never consume a plant based solely on written descriptions or illustrations. Consult a local botanist when in doubt.
Deciduous tree with drooping branches and feathery bipinnate or tripinnate compound leaves. Small white or cream fragrant flowers in loose clusters. Long pendant seed pods (20-45cm) resembling drumsticks. Smooth grey bark, brittle wood. Young shoots and stems often reddish or purplish.
Building & Timber
Soft, lightweight wood not suitable for construction or furniture. Brittle branches break easily in strong winds. Wood primarily used for light fencing, paper pulp, or as fuelwood. Living posts can root and create living fences. Better valued for food and medicine than timber.
Curiosities
One seed can purify up to 1 liter of water through natural coagulation. Contains all essential amino acids - rare for a plant. Can increase breast milk production in nursing mothers. Called 'nebedaye' (never die) in some African languages due to resilience. Ben oil from seeds used in perfumes and ancient Egyptian cosmetics.
