Herbalistic
This information is for educational purposes only. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before using any plant medicinally.
Traditional uses include bark and leaves for respiratory conditions, dysentery, and eye ailments. Bark used externally for wounds and skin conditions. Seeds and bark contain compounds with antimicrobial properties. Historical use in folk medicine for treating coughs and colds. Modern research investigating anti-inflammatory properties.
Kitchen
Young leaves historically used as food wrapping in Mediterranean regions (similar to grape leaves). Seeds edible when roasted but rarely consumed today. No significant culinary use in modern cuisine. Leaves sometimes used to wrap cheese for aging in traditional practices.
Ecology
Provides habitat for numerous bird species in urban environments. Seeds eaten by finches and other small birds. Hollow trunks in mature trees shelter bats and cavity-nesting birds. Supports limited insect diversity compared to native trees. Deep roots help stabilize soil and manage stormwater in cities.
Identification
Never consume a plant based solely on written descriptions or illustrations. Consult a local botanist when in doubt.
Large deciduous tree reaching 100ft tall. Distinctive exfoliating bark reveals patches of cream, gray-green, and brown. Leaves maple-like with 3-5 pointed lobes, 4-10 inches wide. Spherical seed balls (1-1.5 inches) hang on long stalks, persisting through winter. Massive trunk often with buttressed base.
Building & Timber
Hard, fine-grained wood similar to beech. Excellent for furniture making, veneer, and interior joinery. Takes stain and polish well, producing attractive 'lacewood' pattern when quarter-sawn. Used for butcher blocks due to hardness. Prone to warping if not properly dried. Not durable for exterior use without treatment.
Curiosities
London Plane is a hybrid between American Sycamore and Oriental Plane, first appearing in the 1600s. Can live over 400 years. Hippocrates taught medicine under a Plane tree on Kos island - the tree still stands today. Napoleon planted Plane trees along French roads for shade for his marching armies. The camouflage pattern of the bark inspired military designs.
