Bark historically used as astringent for treating diarrhea, hemorrhoids, and inflammatory conditions. Contains high tannin content (15-20%) with antiseptic properties. Deciduous tree 60-100ft tall with distinctive lobed leaves (7-11 deep lobes). Bark deeply furrowed, dark gray to black. Acorns 0.75-1 inch long with shallow, scaly cup covering 1/4 of nut. Leaves 4-8 inches long, shiny green above, paler beneath. Terminal buds clustered, pointed, and slightly hairy.
