Herbalistic
This information is for educational purposes only. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before using any plant medicinally.
Seeds (pinones) are highly nutritious, rich in proteins and carbohydrates, traditionally important food source for Mapuche people of Chile. Resin has been used in traditional medicine for wound healing. Inner bark reportedly used for treating ulcers in folk medicine. Modern use limited due to conservation status.
Kitchen
Large edible seeds (2 inches long) can be eaten raw, roasted, or boiled with sweet, starchy flavor similar to chestnuts. Traditional Chilean cuisine uses them in various dishes. Seeds can be ground into flour for baking. Each cone contains 100-200 seeds but trees take 30-40 years to produce cones.
Ecology
Native to Chilean and Argentinian Andes, grows in volcanic soils at 600-1800m elevation. Dioecious species requiring male and female trees for seed production. Provides habitat for endemic parakeets and supports specialized seed-dispersing rodents. Fire-resistant bark helps survival in wildfire-prone regions. IUCN listed as Endangered.
Identification
Never consume a plant based solely on written descriptions or illustrations. Consult a local botanist when in doubt.
Evergreen conifer reaching 30-40m tall with distinctive triangular, sharp-pointed leaves arranged spirally on branches. Bark is thick, resinous, and marked with rings from old branch scars. Branches in regular whorls of 3-7. Male cones cylindrical, female cones spherical up to 20cm diameter taking 2-3 years to mature.
Building & Timber
High-quality timber with straight grain, light color, and excellent durability. Historically used for ship masts, construction beams, and fine furniture. Wood is knot-free and easily worked. Now rarely harvested due to protected status and slow growth rate (1-6 inches annually). Some plantation timber available in Chile.
Curiosities
Named 'monkey puzzle' because Victorian English remarked it would puzzle a monkey to climb. Can live over 1,000 years. National tree of Chile. Trees are either male or female, determined only after 15-20 years. Survived since Mesozoic era (200 million years). Sacred to Mapuche people who call it 'Pewen'.
